The tidal estuaries of Wales’s north coast have traditionally supported a way of life devoted to making a living from the sea, none more so than the cocklers of the Dee estuary.
My doll Brangwen is depicted selling the fruits of the sea harvest. She wears a short open-fronted ‘betgwn’ (bedgown) with the two sides pinned back, an underskirt, sleeve guards and apron. Her hat is a typical early 19th century style of cockle bonnet, with a frilled underbonnet and she carries a large basket full of cockles
Standing 14” high Brangwen has porcelain head, hands and half-legs. Her features are carefully china painted and she has life-like set in eyes and a soft brown mohair wig.
