Since before medieval times, the market town of Brecon has been at the heart of the Welsh woollen industry. My doll Arwena is depicted with an authentic wooden replica of a ‘drop spinner’, a very useful and simple device that had the advantage over the wheel of being portable, enabling a woman to turn her free moments into gainful employment, no matter where she was.
Arwena wears a woollen dress, a shawl draped across one shoulder and a striped neck-cloth. She has an apron, a black felt hat with squat crown, and frilled underbonnet. Standing 14” high (including hat) Arwena has an original porcelain head, hands and half-legs. Her features are carefully china painted and she has life-like set in eyes and a soft brown mohair wig.
